What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping, and other routine activities. Orthognathic surgery corrects these problems and, in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, will improve the overall appearance of the facial profile.

Modern Surgery

We will use digital imaging technology to demonstrate the overall benefits of orthognathic surgery. Computerized treatment planning minimizes treatment times and recovery periods and improves the overall results of your surgery.

Safety Proven

Like all other orthodontic procedures, orthognathic surgery is safe. We will refer you to a trusted oral surgeon who will complete your surgery.

Long-Term Results

State-of-the-art materials such as titanium plates and miniature screws provide superior stability and strength. This gives your surgery results longevity and durability you can count on.

Quick Recovery

Advances in surgery technology and procedures have made orthognathic surgery more comfortable than ever. While there is still a short recovery time, most patients are back to their normal routine soon after surgery.

With improvements in orthodontic treatment and technology, many issues can be resolved without orthognathic surgery. We will do a thorough examination and evaluation of your orthodontic needs to make our recommendations for your unique case. We will only recommend surgery if we believe that it is vital to achieving your orthodontic results.

If surgery is deemed necessary, we will walk you through each step and ensure you are set up for a successful surgery and recovery time.  Fortunately, advances in surgical technology and procedure have drastically reduced post-surgical recovery time. In fact, most patients return to their normal routines soon after surgery.

Orthognathic Surgery FAQ's

Yes. There are several different types of jaw surgery that correct specific orthodontic issues. Common issues resolved by jaw surgery included bite issues, asymmetry of the jaws, and recessed chin.
While surgical advances have made recovery times much shorter, there is still an expected recovery period. This depends on the severity of each case, but normally the maximum recovery period is one month.
Corrective jaw surgery does often change the facial shape. For example, it may create more symmetry or move the chin into its proper position. Most patients will begin to see these changes within the first few days after swelling has subsided.
To prepare for your jaw surgery, you may be asked to get lab work done, stop smoking, take or adjust certain medications, and avoid taking anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin that may increase the chance of bleeding and bruising.
Almost all incisions required for jaw surgery occur inside the mouth and therefore are not visible. If a small incision is required on the mandible, it is typically no larger than 2-4 mm and is usually not noticeable after 3-6 months.
Yes, you should expect to experience a fair amount of swelling for the first few days after surgery. For most patients, the swelling subsides significantly within a week and almost entirely within two weeks.
